The Orc of Draenor – Process Art!!

Ahoy all!!

I hope you all are doing great! Thank you for stopping by to see what is going on here at DutzWorks!

Well, things have been pretty good here, catching up on work with the The Oatley Academy of Visual Storytelling where I staff part time and once I am more caught up I will be jumping back on my first children’s book.

Until then I work on little fun sketches a few times a week and that is what brings us to this post! It is Saturday night as I write this and on Thursday I started a sketch when I had a few minutes and it grew into a really neat piece. I have been inspired lately but some art friends lately (I will post links to them below) and also with the visuals I have seen in the new trailers for the new movie, “Warcraft.” Here is the trailer for your enjoyment too!

It is based on an online game that was first introduced in 1994 by Blizzard Entertainment. Newer versions/expansions of the game are now called “World of Warcraft.” It has grown to be one of the world’s largest online multiplayer games and is rich with creative characters, races and locations. A ton of amazing creativity and art has been poured into this world and is shows in both the work that is produced for it and by the dedication of it’s players.

Well, thanks to all of this inspiration, I ended up pumping out a creature sketch for the characters called “Orcs” and after making the drawing I thought it would be a great opportunity to practice my digital painting and to make a value study in greyscale of the piece. As I drew it, in my head I kept picturing the character backlit with a strong, hazy light and atmosphere blowing past him. I also corrected the name of the piece to “The Orc of Draenor” because I found out during research that the Orcs were actually from a world with that namesake so I wanted to be more accurate. Additionally, I found out that they got to the world of Azeroth through a dimensional gateway called “The Dark Portal” so this painting of mine actually kind of works well under that context!

Additionally I recently began my first classes at The Oatley Academy and they are part of a series called “The Magic Box.” The entirety of the course will be teaching me a full spectrum of creating art in Photoshop. One of the big things that Chris Oatley, the director of the school and instructor of the course, concentrates on is the creation of atmosphere in our art. I am still in the beginnings of the classes but just what I have watched on how he breaks down the building blocks of this method of painting has made a big impression on me. I wanted badly to try it out in this piece and to push it to the extreme as a way of building the intensity of the mood in the art. I really like the way it turned out and I cannot tell Chris and my other muses just how much their inspiration means to me.

Those inspirational artists are listed here so you all can go see more of what they are making and be inspired too!

The Warrior Process Post!

Ahoy fans and visitors!

Welcome to my Process Post for my new my new digital painting, “The Warrior!”

Hello to all! Thank you so much for stopping here to check out this new process post! I have been kind of going crazy with inspiration lately so this is another piece that has jumped from the page to the tablet and then on to your screen!

———–

I was at an event with the family one evening recently when I pulled out the sketchpad to doodle. I wanted to try to work on a few head sketches because I feel that I need to add variety to the shapes and proportions of the faces I draw. As usual, a simple sketch turns into narrative-like doodles and I ended up drawing two faces that vastly contrasted each other. I thought it would be fun to give them two character types and then use them to practice more on my digital painting. I wanted to call the duo “The Wizard & The Warrior.”

In the case of the Warrior, I started with a cool pallet with deep blues and purples and want to exercise a warm pallet of red, gold and oranges as a contrast on the Wizard piece when I paint it later.

I admit, I really got carried away with excitement on this piece and kept trying to push it as practice. Then, when I thought I was comfortable with a stopping point, my oh so awesome and bold wife pointed out an area that was lacking and I really had to face it honestly. It was with the skull-shaped face painting. My wife said that the first version I had (when I was just trying to hint at the skull) was too faint and vague. I had to take a step back and admit to myself that she was right and then I went back into it and pumped up the color and shape of the skull and the whole piece is better for it! Thanks sweetie!

Lets have some fun and watch how The Warrior was built in the layers from finished pencils to digital painting!

So, I am going to hold off on painting “The Wizard”, the complimentary piece to this painting, until I have a few more panels of my book, “The Tiniest Titan,” finished. I really need to get control of the distractibility I am having on that project. I keep getting inspired to do all of these other practice pieces, which are great ways of giving myself breathing room on learning to paint better, but they are also beginning to become a tool of avoidance and I need to maintain myself. This is one of the biggest hurdles we creative-type people face with personal projects; maintaining momentum and drive on a singular piece or project over time.

I have been a professional graphic designer for 7 years now and working on my own small projects on the side for years too and I really want to make a serious move to turn my intellectual properties into products. For me to be successful with that, I have to maintain my professionalism with my books even though they are personal projects. I want The Tiniest Titan to be the first of many successful books and the beginning of a grander creative future for my family and I and that requires that I take myself and my schedule seriously. That can be hard at times, but well worth it.

Now that I am all booked to go to the Creative Talent Network Expo ( CTNx ) in Burbank November of this year, I really want to be able to showcase the finished Titan book along with a strong portfolio. There are people that I am sure I am destined to meet and connect to creatively and my book and portfolio will be GREAT tools in those conversations! I will tell you all more about that as the show gets closer! But…enough with my talkativeness, lol!

BoneMask Art Process!

Ahoy fans and visitors!

Welcome to my Process Post for my new piece of art, BoneMask!

Hello to all! Thank you so much for stopping here to check out this new process post! I am really excited about showing you the breakdown of this piece because it was so much fun to make!

I worked on this piece and the Podcasts Monster painting very close together in time to get the inspiration out of my system while I had it. Now that these are out for you all to enjoy, I am going to push myself to dive back into my children’s book, The Tiniest Titan, so I can get it completed by September of this year!

My goal is to have it ready for a charity Kickstarter to enable me to to share the story with a wider audience based on the campaign goals. I will be narrowing down all of the details as I get closer to completing the project and will then share them with you all!

———–

Alrighty! Onward to the details of this piece of art, BoneMask!

This piece is one that started as a sketch I dreamed up when was literally staring at shapes on a wall! Let me explain, I have recently been re-watching a comic movie from years ago that I enjoyed about Marvel’s character, The Punisher.

I have always liked the use of the flat white, splattered skull in the character’s design. Everything else is utilitarian about his costume and constantly changes in accordance to the task at hand. Yet, in general, the skull is a consistent character mark and to me it is a reminder of the character’s resolve. Punisher is a rough, determined character and the symbol of death he carries emphasizes that ferocity.

To me, it is a great approach to design. So, staring at the wall one day I put together series of shapes and fueled by the skull inspiration, this mask illustration took shape. I sketched the line work down and thought it presented a great opportunity to exercise my digital painting to get more practice in!

I was then helped by two amazing artists I have the honor of working with from the team of The Oatley Academy, Fred Lang and AJ Nazzaro! I will link to their sites below! They helped to take the piece from cool to amazing with their suggestions of additional texture, color variation and composition. It really made a huge difference and I am immensely grateful to them for it!

Here are the links to find their great work and follow them online too!

That was cool!

Thank you all so very much for checking in with the new work that I am able to put up when I have time! I am planning on turning a few of my recent pieces ( this BoneMask piece is one ) into prints you all can purchase! I will be sure to notify you when they are available!

I will also make a new post next month, ( June of 2015 ) with some of the finished images from my Titan children’s book! This will help me to share some of the work and will also help to encourage me to keep a good pace on the production of the art.

Until then, my very best to all of you!

Podcast Monster Process!

Ahoy fans and visitors!

Welcome to my first Process Post!

I am sorry it has been so long since I last posted but things have been pretty insanely busy, whew! Aside from my full time job as a Sr Graphic Designer I am also now working part time with Chris Oatley and his Academy as the Creative Fulfillment Coordinator! This allows me to help Chris, Lora Innes, Justin Copeland and the rest of the team of The Oatley Academy of Visual Storytelling while still working on personal projects when I get the chance.

My current work for the Academy consists of handling incoming technique and heart-felt questions from other artists like you and myself. Then I take that content and filter and condense it to a list of information that the team can then apply to school functions and content for the podcasts to help out the wider audience like yourselves! I will also be working on many specialized types of projects with the school and I will release more information about that as this year goes on!

This is one of the most amazing professional opportunities that I have ever come in contact with so I am looking forward to all of the awesome projects, products and conversations the future will bring!! I will do my best with relaying all of these kinds of cool stories and inspiration on to you and sharing with you some of my new amazing adventures!

So, for this post I wanted to share some art that I have been working on as practice for my digital painting! I am still working on my children’s book, The Tiniest Titan ( I believe I am going to officially change the name to this ), and these kinds of quick pieces allow me to get some color bugs worked out between panels of the Titan book.

This piece is one that started as a sketch when I was recording a recent “ArtCast” podcast with Chris Oatley and two other amazing artists from the Academy, Edge and Ania!

That was Fun!

I will also have a post up in the next week or so with this same kind of layered breakdown of my newest practice piece, “BoneMask!” Here is a quick teaser of that piece!

Oh, fun footnote!:

I am working on the details but i t looks like I will be able to go to CTNx in November of this year! CTNx, or the Creative Talent Network Expo, is a trade show dedicated to to the animation, illustration and movie entertainment industries. It is a place where visually creative and content creative (writers, technical, etc) professionals get the chance to meet with other working professionals, studios and similar artists to talk shop, enjoy new material and projects and generally meet to network and have fun!

I am blessed to be able to have the opportunity to do this and it is thanks to family and friends that I will be able to go at all so I am very thankful to all of them! My plan is to have Titan finished so I can  showcase it to other artists and so I can also share it with publishers and studios in hopes that I can start talking about ways to publish it! Please keep your fingers crossed for this!

If it works out, it will make things even easier for my next property as I work on it. That book will be called “Bots Amusement Park” and I am looking forward to when I get to dig further into it. I may wait until the beginning of next year to start working on “Bots” because I am looking to take my first series of classes from The Oatley Academy between books so I can level up my skills in preparation!

I will be sure to let you all know what I am working on as I get through things because I love sharing all the amazing material I am learning!

My very best to all of you!

Until then,
Best be to yee’ me mateys!

Bringing a Myth to Life – Creating The Tiny Titan!!!

Ahoy fans and visitors!
With this post I wanted to take a few moments and show the process for some of the art for my current major personal project. At this point the story it titled “The Tiny Titan” and is a loose play on the myths of the ancient Greeks. In my story I take the idea of the great elemental titan creatures and I add a more structured family system to them and play with the idea that they even have young yet powerful demi-titan children who command lesser elements. This first story centers around a young demi-titan named Magmamus. He has a lot of growing up to do and his family do their best to point him in the right direction.
If this story is a success there may be additional ones after I create at least the first installment of my other book, Bot’s Amusement Park. With Bot’s I will be trying a neat spin on the way I normally do an illustrated story so working on that story should give The Tiny Titan the time it needs to grow into something bigger if it is meant to. If it does then I will be able to possibly skip back to it and write a second tale of Magmamus and his home of ancient Greece.
Well, outside of the story, the art has been a great deal of fun but also had it’s trials for me too. See, I come from hand drawn, penciling background. I really enjoy that medium but that additionally has it’s drawbacks. First of all, I generally don’t like inking. I feel that I lose some of the energy of the original line when I add ink to the page.

Click Below for more of the story of this piece and it’s art!!!
Lets have some fun and watch how this panel from The Tiniest Titan was built in the layers from thumbnail sketch to digital painting!

I know that this is really just in my head because the comic industry has some absolutely amazing inkers and their work explodes with life, that is just not where my skill level is. Additionally,  I grew up studying some really amazing pencil artists, one of which was a professional but rarely had his work inked. Instead, his work was so tight the Colorist could scan it in and after making a few adjustments, could go right to the coloring stage and it was amazing. The penciler’s name was Michael Turner and the colorist is Peter Steigerwald. So, I really skipped a great deal of working with ink and I am just now learning it to add it to my creative arsenal overall. Though I did not illustrate The Tiny Titan with ink, my recent experience with it during October’s Inktober event has been improving the way I handle the line work.
With the following pictures and comments, I want to explain the process that I am going through to create the art for the book of The Tiny Titan. At times it was a long process but I was amazed at the kinds of artwork I could create when I stretched outside of my normal illustration box.
Here are the major steps of my illustration process!
Rough Thumbnail
Thumbnails/Roughs
This is the stage where I get to explore the idea of a panel or page with the least amount of care or control. It is really the first chance I get to sketch and doodle the ideas i have written. In this stage I may redraw a panel 4 or 5 times just to explore the space in my head and excersise the concept. I have found that this simple step in the process is one of the most important because you create your compositions in these little drawings and you can do a great deal of problem solving and editing quickly in this step that could cost you a great deal of time later.
Layout
Full Size Blue Line Layouts
This is the step where I take the best ideas from the former step and I rough them in on full size layout sheets that I make. This book was created to have two landscape panels per most of the pages and I knew the rough dimensions so I created very light layout sheet to print and illustrate on. I used a special pencil called a Non-Photo Blue (or Non-Repro Blue) pencil and it is designed with a very light cyan blue lead. This is great for sketching on final boards because the color is designed to basically disappear in the bright light of a scanner. This allows me to work out the composition at full size on the sheet without having to stress the perfect lines just yet.
Finished Pencils
Finished Pencils
By this point in the illustration process I usually have the look and feel of the image down thanks to the layout and I spend a great deal of time laying down the crisp lines. This is always one of my favorite stages of my art projects! I love to draw with pencil and I can get pretty carried away with it when I do, lol! For this specific illustration I really wanted to enjoy the medium shot/waist up view of Magmamus and his hand gestures. This was also the first full view we get of his new mythical bird friend.
Flats
Flats and Content Separation
I then scan the penciled pages into the computer and take them into PhotoShop. Then I use color to separate the different areas of the illustration. That separation could be between major objects in the same area or simply separation of foreground and background. With them separtated, I could go back in very easily and work on one area or the other without risking damaging those separated items.
After the areas or objects are separated into “flats” (areas using a single, flat tone of color to separate them) I am able to start putting certain areas on different layers. This allows those sections to be easily selected within Photoshop. Once these distinctions have been created in the file, I would then go to the color stage and muscle my way through some of the panels, making mistakes many times over on the way! Overall, much of the coloring process is experimentation for me right now and that is one of the reasons it takes me so long. It is one thing to draw a thing, its something else to understand how it would really work in the realm of color.
Colors
Colors

Finally we are to the last of the illustrative stages with in this project and that is the coloring! I love fully color children’s books but with my limited experience with coloring, I was very concerned when starting the project. I didn’t want to have to outsource the colors because I wanted to learn the skills and
I wanted to create this whole crazy thing myself too.

I want to grow from this, even if it is painful growth!

Well, currently I have a short number of the pages in color with only a few of them finished. I ran into a wall working on them and my brilliant wife gave me a great idea; print the pages out at a smaller size and use colored pencils to practice. Amazing! She knows me well and thought this would be a great bridge between my strengths in penciling and my weaknesses in color. I will be working on many of these panels in colored pencil over the next month if all goes well!

That leads us to the finished version of this panel (below). I take the finished colors at full size, determine the best fit and crop and then trim off the outer area. This actually happens in a different program that I use for the actual book layout and production so the original color file is not really cut down, just seen through a “window” in the application. I am then able to go back to the color file if I need to reposition the frame or use it for a different area of the book.

WHEW!!!
Can you believe that all of this happens on almost every one of the panels for the book!?! When all is said and done there will be around 45 separate illustrations ranging from this 8.5″ x 4.5″ one to larger 12″ x 18″ ones! Yep, this would probably be the definition of insanity in some lost ancient dictionary.
I have faced more hurdles handling this than I planned and the worst one has been me. I am not the most disciplined artist and it has been very hard to force myself to sit down and work when I finish with other parts of my day.
I really believe in the fun journey of this story and I have a great idea on how to share it with many people around me. That has been a huge driving force that has helped me to not put it aside like so many other projects from the past. It is a fact that we creative types can be fickle with projects, especially our own but this one has a really amazing little future and it is meant to be fun, inspiring and shared with people. I cannot be the one to hold it back. It needs to be brought to the little hands that would learn from it and the big hands that would read it to them!
______
Thank you so very much for reading this epic post! It is once I have wanted to make for a long time and just wasn’t slowing myself down enough to do it.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments and my very best to you until the next post on this crazy creative ship of mine one the ocean of the arts!
Until then,
Best be to yee’ me mateys!
May the winds be at your backs and friends be at your sides. Blessed be your journeys.

Captain Dutz's #Inktober Art Wrap Up!

Ahoy all! Sorry this is so late but here is the collection from this last month’s (October 2014) annual art event, #Inktober!

The first time i can remember seeing anything about the event called #inktober was probably 2 – 3 years ago and i was astounded by the quality and variety of works people would post. It is an event in October where artist around the world make a daily ink illustration of any type of topic they want. I have seen them ranging from mystical place to robots, creature and everyday scenes. They post them to their website or social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

This was the first year that i thew my hat in. It was a crazy month with a great deal of things going on a work and home so i did not make a piece everyday but i tried to make quality pieces when i could. I still have a short list of sketch ideas that i did not get to so i will try to pull from that when i sit doen to sketch over the next month or so and i will post them here so you all have a chance to check them out!

Below are the pieces that i was able to do and some of them even show the process steps as i created them!

Thor!

Wolverine Art Contest Entry!!!

Ahoy there! There is a local comic shop here ( Collected ) that started hosting a monthly art contest based on different comic and pop culture properties. They have had competitions based on everything from Captain America to Doctor Who. I joined in on a few and then missed a great deal from the last few months because i just wasn’t working the production time into my schedule.

This November, in celebration/remembrance of the current Marvel event, the death of Wolverine, the theme of the contest was that big, clawed, hairy Canadian hero, Wolvie! Well, while i was trying to decide on what super detailed beat-down scene i was going to draw, my awesome wife suggested something completely out of left field, illustrating a baby version of Wolverine!

Her idea was brilliant and below is what came of it! I added the pencil layout and close-ups of the fun little details I put into the drawing from the impaled Deadpool to the Phoenix/Jean Grey doll wrapped in his arm. I also added the pencil version of the art so you can see what it looked like before it was colored! It was a lot of fun and a good deal of time to color so I just barely had it turned in on time! Whew! As of the time of this post the judging is still going on so I will update it and let you know if I place!

Thanks for looking in and my very best to you!

You can see this and more on my art Facebook page here titled DutzWorks!

Take care and stay awesome!

' The Empress ' Sketch!

Ahoy me Maties!!!!

I am just jumping on to drop this first pencil drawing of my new sketch, “The Empress!” This is something that I started out working on as a fun sketch while my wife and I had our kids at storytime at our local library a few weeks ago. I worked on it there mostly with a few days of doodling otherwise. I recently was given the question about painting it and thought it would be a great way to practice my digital painting in preparation for the ‘Bots Amusement Park’ story that I am currently crafting!

I will jump on every now and then to make quick posts showing the progress and explaining the process of getting this to be an awesome painted piece. This is a very special piece to me because the illustration’s likeness is based on someone very dear to me. Keep your eyes peeled for the future posts as I make progress here and there and learn more about painting digitally!

Until then,
Best be to yee’ me mateys!
May the winds be at your backs and friends be at your sides. Blessed be your journeys.

1st Sketch Dump of 2013!!!

Ahoy Shipmates, Crew and Visitors!!!

Welcome to the first sketch dump of this awesome year! Thank you SO much for stopping by! I just have a few doodles to throw down and then will update you all on a few of the upcoming events in my creative endeavors. But first, onward to the art!!!!

Ok Crew, now on to some of the new tasks at hand. As you all know, I have been off line for a few months to take care of home, work and extra duties. I have been working on little things here and there but I have been continuing to keep my main goal of only having very few personal projects going on at once. I do not want to risk the quality of my work to overtaxing myself.

Well, in light of realigning my schedule, I have been looking back at my personal all-ages project, Kodi the Starfish, and trying to plan out my next steps. I was working with a small group of other artist to put together a new Space Anthology, but many of us became very busy with our own tasks and I still need to see where we all stand on that. I was lucky enough to get started with a few team members so I will try to catch you all up on that project as I learn more too.

I am very glad that my anthology entry is a second short story for Kodi because the work I have been doing can still be applied directly to the bigger story and project. As I have been getting back into the short story and considering the content of the larger, complete story, I realized that I have some preparation to do! As an illustrator, I never really learned to organize and craft ideas together as an astute writer would.

As I looked across the vast distance ahead of me, I came to the conclusion that I would need some tools. Following that realization, I thought this would be great to engage the communities of experienced artists that I have connected with to learn from their successes and failures and cut my learning curve down dramatically. I have now started to build my new “Toolkit” and will begin a closed discussion groups with my contacts to better adjust the tools. My goal is to create a product that can aid the “writer challenged” to capture, organize and then harness our ideas properly to create great stories. Then, we can do what we do best, take the written work and create awesome art from it to make our own comics and books!!

This is still in its infant stage but I will let you all in on some of the tools as they develop!!! Alright me Hearty’s, I will be developing new material and content soon to share with you all and I will update you here and on Kodi’s Blog as I progress!

Thank you all so very much for checking and for following along with the many crazed creative adventures on The Captain’s Blog!

Best be to yee’ me mateys!
May the winds be at your backs and friends be at your sides. Blessed be your journeys.

Deck Monsters Sketch Series!

                        Ahoy Shipmates, Crew and Visitors!!!

WOW!! I cannot tell you how excited I am to finally get to post these pieces up! These are based on inspirations I have been having lately by playing Magic: The Gathering with some coworkers and friends. I have been playing for about two months and as with many things, it gets my artistic and creative gears going. So, I started pulling out an awesome sketchbook I go from Walmart and started going nuts! Each original drawing took between 15 and an hour depending which piece and then I got giddy on the computer. I went into Illustrator and created the title type solution and borders that I then took into Photoshop and combined with a scan of the cardboard back of the sketchbook. I then pulled the images of the Mana (elemental symbols at the bottom of the art) and added those with effects into Photoshop. I then went crazy adding color effects and lighting giving thought to the mood and attitude of each element type and creature.
This was a huge amount of fun and I would like to actually send this to the games creators just so they can see what kind of geekery they helped to inspire!!!
I really hope you all have fun looking these over and please comment if you have any questions about the content or creation process or if you are a fan of the game too and have a suggestion for more Monsters. I have at least two more thumbed out but will hold off on those until I finish the second short story for Kodi the Starfish, my all-ages book series!!
Thank you all for visiting!!
