Art of DÖR

It began with a jaunt…in the woods?

“Forrest for the trees” is right! There are times as a creative, especially a professional one, where the task of devising and working through our art or designs can be a labor. It’s a weight we love to carry, not unlike carrying our child upon our hip, but it still require muscle and rest.

DÖR, and then the Art of DÖR was born from the resting space between the weight lifting. It was a fun piece made around the time that I was encountering quite a bit of beautiful manga art and lots of studio Ghibli pieces. My family and I were also getting ready to hunt down a copy of Kiki’s Delivery Service and I kept coming across so many scenes of amazing art from the studio.

Just before making this first piece I also sketched the piece here I called the Islander. It was the beginning of a series of drawings and ink pieces I was making using a unique sized piece of paper my wonderful wife suggested using after they were going to be trimmed from larger sheets I had.

These 5″ x 13″ pieces of paper changed the boundaries of of the usual frame/proportions I would draw in and broke open a fun little part of my mind to new ideas. It was awesome! So, please enjoy the strange jaunts and the unique locations we will go to as we follow the perfect portals, nigh, the interesting egresses(!) in the Art of DÖR!
