Captain's Rant #6 – Kodi the Starfish Art & Story Update – Page 8 colors almost finished

Ahoy Shipmates and visitors!

Here is a quick update to the progress of the Kodi the Starfish short story art. I have finished most of the little fixes to all of the line work and started to color the first page. Thanks to the help of my community friends over at illopond.com, I have improved the digital painting quality dramatically. I have a few things to clean up on it and this page will be finished.

With that, I will have the color foundation established to apply to the rest of the pages. I will keep you all in the loop at these progress. I apologize for being so infrequent but I wanted to show you the results of these efforts.

Thank you all and I will post more soon!

Link to the rest of the contributors for this anthology is here!

My next regular Captain’s BLOG! post should be, “Captain’s Orders #2 – Waist-ed!” and that may be after I get some more progress posted for Kodi.

Yo’ Ho’!

Captain's Rant #5 – Kodi the Starfish Art & Story Update (Some-More!)

Ahoy Shipmates and Visitors!

This is just a quick update to show some new progress and to let you know that I am still here, just crazy with Kodi!

Here is a new intro spread that I am designing to go in to the digital version of Kodi’s “Setting Free” short story. I am also discussing it with the team over at Illopond to see if they want to format the Bio-Intro information for every contributor of their “8 in Spaaaaaccee” anthology like this.

It is designed to look like an old storybook in space!!

This is the intro spread with a concept gallery on the left and the bio and story establisher on the right. Then they would go straight into the story well prepared (following spread). I am finished with the line work of the 8 pages and have now started the digital painting as you can see with page 1 on the left side of the second spread.

Thank you all for looking in and I will post more soon!!!!

Best be to yeee, Yo’ Ho’!!!

Captain's Rant #4 – Kodi the Starfish Art & Story Update!

Kodi the Starfish

Ahoy …Everybody!!! I am sorry I am running a week late on this post. I am still getting used to all of the set up and planning needed to run a great blog. Still, thank you so very much for stopping by to look in and get caught up!

This post is specifically for the Kodi the Starfish short children’s story I have been developing for the new space themed anthology through Illopond.com. I have been having a blast and learning a ton (!!!!) about being a better artist and using better processes. This is just getting stacked on what I have learned with a separate comic submission I have worked on also and man, have I grown!

Ok my sea-faring adventurers, here is the general synopsis of this Kodi short story.

In the world of Kodi and his best friend, a little girl named Kadi, many things are fantastic and beautiful. Even Kodi himself is an amazing site because he is actually a star. In their world, all of the stars in the sky are really schools of fish and other life-forms. The galaxy is literally teeming with life and every-now-and-then, Earth gets to visit and learn from these magnificent creatures.

Our short story focuses on a special event for Kodi and Kadi. The time has come to release Kodi back into the wild for he is now old enough to join back with his family. Kodi, a rare white dwarf starfish, has been friend with Kadi’s family a long time and this is a very special day for them. In these 8 pages we will follow them as they load into the family spaceship and take flight. Then, after the beautiful release from his tank, they have time to “swim” and play before Kodi’s family, a small school of giant starfish, arrives to take him on the rest of his trip back home.

It is meant to be a very sweet tale about the love of two friend and how that holds them together, even when faced with important events in their lives. Pleasae know that I have many ideas for further stories with them so, all going well on my side, this will hopefully not be the only story I get to tell of them.

Alright, below are the pages thus far and I show both the rough planning art and the more finished lifework. Each page has a short list of corrections so I am not calling them fully finished yet, but they are about 90% good to go.

This is where I am now. I tightened it up some last night and will hopefully finish today.
Soon to Come!! The last spread!
Pages 7-8

Then This would finish the 8 page illustration side of the entry and I would finish the digital coloring. This will hopefully go quicker than the lifework side.

Ok, shipmates and visitors! I think this will end this post for the time being. My next post will be “Captain’s Orders #2 – Waist-ed!”
This will be a tutorial about drawing figures from the waist up. A general overview of my approach.

Please feel free to comment on this post or leave questions. I will keep you informed as I finish more pages and get into the digital coloring.

Until then, May the winds be at your backs and friends be at your sides. Blessed be your journeys.

Art-Gazing #2 – Living in Comics and Fantasy

Ahoy to all me shipmates n’ crew! Welcome back to another visit on the ship and I thank you all for doing so!

This post will be another installment of the Art-Gazing series meant to inspire and energize your creative self. We all need this from time to time especially when we are draining that creativity into our art. I know that sounds strange but if you think about it, when you are creating you kind of spill it onto the page/canvas/screen or instrument and swish it around to get your final piece. Sometimes it is logical and others it is chaos just made pretty but either way this still empties our reserve some. We, as creative individuals, need to refill and revive that battery or we will lose sight of why we are creating in the first place. That is sad and it is my intent to give you a place to stop and charge up every now and then.

So, in this post I want to address something very close to me and something that I have struggled with before in my life. I am a graphic designer by trade but I created this blog to express my love and enjoyment of both design and illustration and one of my favorite industries is COMICS!

Since I was a child I lived inside of these types of stories and bowed down to masters like Marc Silvestri, Michael Turner, Mark Bagley, Stephen Platt, Jim Lee and David Finch. Now I have new pros to add to the list like Kenneth Rockafort. These are guys who just knew how to breath life and action into a page and tell a story that the eyes could be consumed by.

Then, as I grew older, I hit a point in my life when I became jaded over the industry and I lost touch with my love with it for many years. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until I found my way home again. Now, I have a whole new matured appreciation and admiration for this industry and I am finding more reasons to do so all of the time.

That brings me to this post. I wanted to share some topics that are currently getting me excited about the comics art form and industry and how I am seeing it change and grow all of the time. It may be long winded but I hope you enjoy. At the end of the post I will tell you about some new progress in my projects and new ideas that are brewing in the “Lightning Box!”

The World of Fans!

They’re Everywhere!!!!! My gosh! Seriously, this is probably the most important point in this post, people love comics and art! Three simple topics that I hope will remind you of just how deeply this industries connect to people.

TV
The Big Bang Theory!
Holy Crap, this is an awesome show and just makes ya love geek, nerds and fanboys that much more!

Other shows of awesomeness!!!
Power Rangers (for the kids)
and so much more!
Movies
Star Wars – This birthed a whole society of fans!
The Lord of the Rings and the upcoming Hobbit
Snow White and the Hunstman – A movie in process that just makes me excited! Fantasy and film meet!

and
Captain America
Thor
All of the Spider-Man films
and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog – Comic fans meets musicals. My son and I love this one!
Daily life

I just want to mention how the love of comics, sci-fi and art can connect down to the very fiber of us. I have seen photos and videos of people getting married with Klingon vows (Star Trek) and being wed in costumes (cosplay). We collect books and sketches and get giddy when meeting a favorite artists (like for me getting to shake hands with Marc Silvestri, below, creator of some of my favorite characters and comics!!!).

That was a Darkling sketch that he so graciously made me.

Our lives are connected to this art form and people will always care about it. As an artist, this gives me great relief and hope. I hope it does so for you too. Now, we just need to develop content that our fans and visitors would enjoy tagging along with. Thank you all for traveling with me and the content that I share.

Current Project Progress

The Unknown Comic (well, at the moment) – My writer is almost finished with lettering the 16 pages we created for the submission. We will then construct the pitch bible document and print a short run of the submission book through KABLAM! to send a professional appearing finished piece for them to review. We are sending packets to Image and Dark Horse Publishers and each have about a 4 week waiting window. They say to consider it rejected after that because they cannot contact every team submitting. If they like the product and want to start talking business then we are good to have that conversation and get ready to go!

This tight schedule is one of the reasons I am pressing hard through the Kodi short story. It is not a great idea to have more than one major project stacked at a time because with both being important, you cannot dedicate yourself properly.

Hence,
Kodi the Starfish! – Allllllrighty! With Kodi, I am almost finished with the 4th out of the 8 pages and I have a few minor adjustments to call these pages complete. This is one of the first projects where I will be both doing the line work and the digital coloring. I will explain in detail the ideas I have on this and later this week will be the Captain’s BLOG post with the Kodi update so keep yee ayes peeled!

Here are some of the latest progress for the finished page 4 and the rough page 5. I will post the up to date pages with the Kodi post soon.

Future Projects

1. I may be moving over to a WordPress build for the blog and site so I will keep you “posted”!

2. Well shipmates, as you know I both work full time as a graphic designer and do illustration and design on the side. I mainly do this to keep my creative self alive while building a real professional presence and a place for myself in the industry. I say this to let you know that I have other great ideas brewing for both Kodi and new projects, (one with the amazing community of illopond) but I also have to balance that with the paying freelance until these take off on their own. I will keep you all updated on the ideas, concepts and progress as it happens just know that there is definitely more to come!

As always, I am very glad that you have tagged along and please let me know if you have any comments or questions. I am open to answering questions about my drawing and sketching methods too so feel free to ask.

May the winds be at your backs and friends be at your sides. Blessed be your journeys.

The Captain's Blog #3 – Gut'n The Cap'n!

Good’day me Matey’s!!

Originally I wanted to name this post “The Anatomy of This Artist” but I didn’t think that was piratey enough and ya know meeee, if it ain’t got barnacles, it aint tha’ Cap’n’s (really? That’s not even grammatically correct! Ha!)

Alright, this post is to be an introduction to your Captain and a way for me to share a little of me’self. I will be discussing a some about my professional career and how i spend my creative free time. I will also discuss some of my many inspirations, God and my family being the highest. So settle yer selves down and prepare to be entertained and informed. This may be a long post but I pray you enjoy it and I will do my best not to completely bore you!

First, my name is Derrick Utz. I am a husband of an absolutely amazing woman and the father of two beautiful stars that fell straight from the heavens. My son just turned 6 and my daughter is 2 and a half. Daily my family amazes me and I fall more in love with them all of the time.

Professional:
7 years ago we moved to the bigger city to give me access to an art school and that is where my professional career was born. I graduated with an associates in graphic design and began to be a huge fan of the retail and editorial design and marketing. Now, after getting my degree I am blessed with a career in design in a marketing department for a manufacturing company who sells product all over the world. I work on many new types of collateral often.

Personal Creativity:
Even with all of this professional creativity, my illustration talents and preferences are not tapped nearly as much as I would like them to be. That is why I still went home for many years and continued to create illustrations ranging in subject matter from monsters and epic creatures to superheroes and beautiful maidens. Often I created characters that defined a certain archetype and every now and then, ones that you just couldn’t figure out. I have drawn comics and fantasy art since I can remember holding a pencil. This is something that I also truly have a passion in. This is also one of the reasons that I am involved with both a potential comic project and developing my own children’s stories.

I will soon do a sketch dump of different portfolio pieces. They will eventually end up on my website but that is currently still under construction.

Inspirations:

Comics and Fantasy art:
Top Cow Productions and Marc Silvestri:
Comic are a very important art form to me. They are a kind of window into different places and situations. Since I was a young teen there have been many artists that inspired me. A few have stuck. Marc Silvestri is one and Michael Turner (an apprentice of his, mentioned below) was another. Their properties and approaches of epic realism made the characters tangible to me. I used to sit and stare at Marc’s work trying to break down just how he did it. He has only gotten better over the years and founded a smaller, independent comic company called Top Cow. In this studio he still takes in promising fledgling artists and helps train them to the next level. There are many pro artist who credit him for their training. He loves to give back.
Kenneth Rockafort is one of Top Cow’s new artists and he is just amazing!

Aspen Comics and Michael Turner:
Aspen Comics was started by a former apprentice of Marc Silvestri. H was a major part of one of a few of my favorite characters, Witchblade and Fathom. I have been told that his style can bee seen all over my finished work. He was a huge inspiration to me and the world felt a loss when he passed away so young from cancer.

Adam Hughes: I admire Adam for his ability to use simple lines to create beautiful characters. He is very efficient with his line work because knows what he is drawing very well.

Lora Innes: Lora is the writer and artist for a web and print comic called The Dreamer. It is a beautifully created tale about a girl who dreams of the Revolutionary War every night. Lora is also a host of Paper Wings Podcast and contributes her vast knowledge to other artists like myself.

Clayburn Moore: Clayburn is a Sculptor. His company creates pieces from a variety of subject matter and comic materials always stop me in my tracks.

Children’s Books and Movies
Movies: Disney/Pixar
Almost anything produced from these companies I have loved. Now that I have children, I have an excuse to watch them more but my wife still laughs at me when I go around the house singing songs from the musicals. I have raised my children on the quality and content of movies like Cars and Wall-e. They get to see how much creativity can accomplish.

WormWorld Saga: This is an online comic that I just recently discovered. It is written and illustrated by Daniel Lieske and I very excited about it. I greatly admire the story and the art that he is producing.

Chris Oatley: Chris is a Character designer and all around art guru for Disney. He is one of the hosts for the podcast of a new creative community called Paper Wings Podcast. He loves to teach and is an amazing digital painter. I am honored to know him.

There are, of coarse, many other artists and material that keep me inspired on a daily bases but these are the ones at the front of my mind right now. Please let em know if you have any questions or comments.

Till next Post me Maties, best wishes!

Captain's Rant #3 – Kodi the Starfish Logo Debut!!!!

Ahoy Shipmates and Visitors!!!!
Thank you for stopping by and look’n in on the The Captain’s BLOG once again!
This is just a quick concept art update and logo debut for my first children’s story; Kodi the Starfish!
Above is almost completely finished story logo! Additionally, below is a sketch dump with concept art for for my 8-page anthology entry into the new book being produced out of www.illopond.com

This will cover a very touching story for the two main characters of the book, Kodi and his best friend Kadi. In a later post I will be sharing the synopsis of this little tale and discuss future ideas for the adventures of our new little friends.
Please enjoy the art and post a comment if you would like. Thank you all so very much for your time and attention and I will see you at my next regular post on Nov 7th. It will be titled “The Anatomy of This Artist” and it will be an in-depth introduction to myself professionally with a little personal pros about what inspires me and what my creative goals are.
P.S. – Thanks to the wonderful community over at Paper Wings Podcast, I have been informed of another awe inspiring artist out here in the digital sea. His name is Daniel Lieske and he is the creator and artist of a story called Wormworld Saga. I am in absolute love with his work. Very few times does another artist take my breath away like this but he has done so in droves. I pray that I can soak up and learn from the windows of brilliance he shares with us. You can find him at www.wormworldsaga.com.
Till next time I wish you happy journeys,

Captain's Orders #1 – "Off With His Head!"

Well, There ye’ bee!!!
I finally made it to this killer post!
Alright everyone, here is the first installment in my quick tutorial series. These are more to show you my methods and processes than to fully explain every way of illustrating the subject matter. I hope that these posts will help you work through your own obstacles and throw more awesome into your art.

I know its early in our journey to have people walking the plank and taking heads but I want to weed out the worthless stowaways like doubt and lack of inspiration. One of the quickest ways of getting into the illustration and drawing mode is with HEAD SKETCHES!!!
This material gets your brain artistically functioning while still working on a stable subject matter (heads don’t change in their basic structure much). This is a great way of getting your brain into the game and functioning and they can be really quick!
Head sketches are also a great way to earn extra money going with quick commissions on your sites and at comic conventions especially!
OK, lets get started!
Below is an image of basic structured head of a man and a woman, common/ heroic figure type. Maybe in another tutorial I will address differing body/ face types but I am also still about these also.
Male:
Brow- Thicker build and muscling, thicker eyebrows
Eyes- Generally smaller and and can be more sunken
Nose- More angular toward crest/bridge of skull, wider at nostrils
Lips- overall thinner and can be less defined on the bottom lip
Chin- Wider and flatter than a woman’s
Neck- Larger muscle groupings and the Traps are anchored higher on the vertebrae
Overall- Representative of strength due to angles
Female:
Brow- less muscling and thinner eyebrows
Eyes- generally larger with longer & thicker eyelashes (great for illustrating!)
Nose- Overall more of a smooth slope than men’s
Lips- Fuller with easily defined edges. Can be very expressive. Their fullness can be expressed with reflections/sheen
Chin- Thinner and tapers more to a point. Jawline also curves out more and that ads to the gently roundness of the structure.
Neck- Less muscling causing it to be thinner overall. Additionally, the Traps are not as thick and give the appearance of anchoring lower to the spine. These features can have the neck “look” longer when it is technically the same length next to a man’s.
Fishyface: The Oyster Eater!
Monsters and Beasts!:
Take the same structure and shift/adjust the placement or emphasis of the features. This works if you want the creature to resemble a more human physiology. This is important if you want the human characters to relate to them on the same level. Adding more animal characteristics take them further away and is a great way of creating a gap of common ground. With more distance between your characters in appearance you can create more tension or opportunities to learn from each other depending on the station/archetype you want them to represent.
Here are two sketches representing more developed features listed above for men and women.
The man is shown with the features of an African American and the female is actually one of my versions of the Angelus from Top Cow Procuctions, one of my favorite comic companies. More on them in another post!
I have also attached a sketch of a child’s face. This is a concept piece for one of the children’s stories I am developing, Kodi the Starfish, mentioned in more detail below in my “Current Project List.”
I will make another post in the future detailing their changes in physical structure for children in the future. I would like you to lock in this lesson’s information first.
WHEW!!!!
That was awesome! Thank you for sailing through it with me! Now that we are finished with the lesson I want to let you in on the secrets of my current projects!

Current Project List
I have been pretty busy with new art lately and I want to inform you of the progress.

Comic
First, the biggest project I have in wait is a comic that is being developed for a submission to Image and Dark Horse Comics. I would be the penciler for the project. The writer is still developing the breakdown of the chapters and from the looks of it, it will be about 10 issues. I have finished character concept art, 16 interior pages and 2 covers. I will post a few pieces when I get approval from the writer and this section of the post will be updated.
Children’s Book
The other major project on my table is for an anthology with the awesome community at Illopond.com! They are an artist project and support community and creating anthologies is one thing they are known for. They have been kind enough to allow me to participate in their latest edition, “8 in Spaaaaace!” 8 main contributors and multiple others will all participate in creating content and I will notify you as to my progress and art as it happens. I will make a special “Captain’s BLOG” post soon about the art and story of Kodi the Starfish, my story. Here is a color sample of a concept piece below.
Alllllgrighty ya scurvy bags a’ bones!!!
I think I have tortured ye enough and bid thee fair well!
Please let me know if you have any questions and post a comment if you’d like!
Thank you for dropping by and best wishes to you. I am working on having a regular, bi-weekly schedule for every other Monday. I will also just drop sketches randomly so keep your aye’s peeled!
See you on Monday, November 7th!

Captain's Rant #2 – My Goodness!

Ahoy visitors and shipmates!

I bid you my apologies that I have left ye to the tides! Been a duel of projects on my side of the ship!

Hello all!,

I know I mentioned that the next post would be my first, quick tutorial session but I have been crazed with the different projects I have been working on. Above is a little sketch I worked this morning and I just wanted thank you for looking in. This week I will to the first “Captain’s Orders: Off With His Head!” head sketch tutorial and I will also be presenting a list of my current projects and links to art for them and away to follow progress. I just wanted you all to be able to tag along now that they are far enough along.

I need to check with my writer for permission to show any snippets of my big comic project because there are still legal points that need to be confirmed and checked off. I do believe that in all of his secretive awesomeness, he will allow a few vague pieces to be revealed!

Otherwise, I will be showing snippets and a bit of story for one of the children’s stories that I am working on with the awesome collective team over at Illopond.com! They create and publish anthologies and the new one that I will be involved with is call “8 in Spaaaace!” Each of their anthologies consist or 8-12 page stories contributed by 8 main artists, hence the “8” in each title. More on this later and I really believe that you will fall in love the the Captain’s characters and story.

Till later this week, the best be to yee!!!!!
Captain Dutz!

The Captain's BLOG #2, "Hoist the Anchor!"

Preparing for the Voyage

In one of the last posts, “Captain’s Rant #1 – Organization and Writer’s Block,” I discussed my planning & task management system. Now that we are past the planning stage in which we identify what pieces we need and when, I want to discuss my two types of preparation for the actual task of working on a project.

Mental Preparation.
In your brainpan me mateys is where all of your art begins. You may be inspired by the awesome waters and islands that surround you but in your mind is where you make it your own. This is where some of the most crucial planning & art begins.
When you look at that blank page, canvas or screen you need to know what you are getting yourself into. A long voyage needs ample supplies and plentiful forethought. Simply acknowledging and planning for the long haul can make the difference between a successful project and a great attempt. This little step can also help to prevent burnout because you are knowingly going into a project with the long term mentality.
Here are a few methods I use to plan for my project, both illustration and graphic design.

1st: I thumb everything. I constantly keep a piece of paper at hand ready to doodle ideas down as they happen. Creative people, professional or not, are still creating when not at their workspace. Just because I am not at my drafting table or at the computer with a open art file in front of me, does not mean that the creativity is off. I have just had to learn to manage its output and control the way it works. After I few days, I take the random sheets and scrapes from the different notes and place them into folders separated by project. Then, when I sit to work on it, they are all in one place and it helps to revive the energy in which I dreamt them up.
2nd. I talk alot! With this I mean that I discuss with a team or friends what items are exciting me or causing problems. As they have said on the Paper Wings Podcast, a circle of friends is one of the most priceless tools you could have. Everyone needs people they can go to when hitting a wall or have exciting news to spread. They need to be people who will honestly love on you and put you into place when needed. I also have an editor; my wife. She loves me, knows me and “fixes” me and my art when she can and it is almost always a dramatic improvement. It may be your name on the art, but it doesn’t have to be created all alone in the dark hull of the ship!!
Workspace Preparation
Ok, here is one that I am sure gets us all. I am still learning to perfect this too. If you are going to master a long journey, your ship needs t be able to handle it. I simply mean, have an area that is functional and allows you to just do the job. You don’t need a studio to make awesome comic art, you just need an acceptable board or table and the right environment.
Make this a focus because if you aren’t producing the quality or rate that you are wanting, something as simple as good music and foot room could be distracting your awesomeness. I am just asking you to be aware of how your surroundings can help or hinder you. I have worked in many environments over the years and the best are the ones that are so accommodating that they disappear when you are working. At that point, it is just you, your tools and the “canvas” and that is when you truly create.
I hope these tips can help you and I look forward to what you produce when you approach and perform with the best preparation behind you!
In my next post I will be conducting the first entry in my tutorial series. It will be titled “Off with his head!” and I will be explaining my approaches to the ever famous head sketch!
As always, best wishes be to ya!
